How It Works

ARTRIS is an open marketplace for artists, curators, and collectors

As a member, you can be any or all of the following:

  • Artist Artist to sell original artworks and/or prints
  • Curator Curator to set up and open online exhibitions
  • Collector Collector to buy original artworks and/or prints

ARTRIS membership and listings are free of charge

  • Join us and become a member for free. If you are an artist, create your own portfolio page and upload images of your artworks for free too. Your user-id that you set in the registration process will be used for your portfolio address (For example, if your user-id is picasso, your portfolio address would be www.artris.com/picasso). Note that your user-id cannot be changed once it has been registered.

Our sales commission is one of the lowest in the market

  • Our sales commission for an original artwork is only 8% of the sale price

Online exhibitions can be hosted by any member

  • To promote sales of artworks, any member can open 28-day online exhibitions free of charge, for unlimited times as far as the individual exhibition periods do not overlap one another.
  • For every sale made in an exhibition, the curator earns 3% of the sale price (This doesn't apply if artists open exhibitions themselves).

Original artworks are sold via ARTRIS and shipped directly from individual artists (ARTRIS provides an escrow service to give you peace of mind)

  • When an original artwork is booked for sale, the artist should set the shipping charge within 7 days and the collector can agree or disagree to pay this within another 7 days.
  • If the collector pays the total price (sale price plus shipping charge), (i) the artist will ship the artwork directly to the collector within 7 days, and (ii) ARTRIS will release to the artist an amount equivalent to the total price less fees and any applicable tax after the artwork has been delivered and the 7-day return period has expired.
  • If the collector doesn’t pay the total price, the sale will be cancelled.

Prints are individually made to orders (print-on-demand) and shipped from ARTRIS

  • ARTRIS sells print-on-demand artworks in various forms with or without frames.
  • On the sale of a print, ARTRIS will pay the artist the license fee of the artwork, which has been set by the artist.

7-day money back guarantee

  • If the collector is not happy with a purchased artwork for any reason, it can be returned within 7 days from the date of delivery.  If the collector decides to return the artwork, he/she should let ARTRIS know via the Contact Us form (www.artris.com/support/contactus). The collector should not ship out the artwork before ARTRIS advise him/her to do so. As soon as the artwork has been returned in its original condition, ARTRIS will issue a full refund for the sale price (Please note that ARTRIS does not reimburse outgoing or return shipping charges unless the return is due to a defect in quality).

All payments are sent and received via PayPal in US dollars

  • You need a PayPal account to buy or sell artworks via ARTRIS.

Browse artworks

There are two ways you can browse artworks: (a) online exhibitions where curated artworks are displayed in a gallery-like setting; (b) listings of all artworks. We suggest you browse and explore the exhibitions first, then search the listings of artworks by artist name, upload date, popularity, or price, as you like.

Visit the artwork page icon

Visit the artwork page

Once you have found an artwork you like, click on the image of it to visit the artwork page and look at it in closer detail (‘magnifying glass view’ and ‘view-in-a-room’). To buy an original artwork: click on the ‘ORIGINAL’ tab (if the ‘ORIGINAL’ tab is not activated, the original artwork is unavailable for sale), then click on the ‘ADD TO CART’ button.

Or, if you want to buy a print: click on the ‘PRINTS’ tab (if the ‘PRINTS’ tab is not activated, prints are unavailable for that artwork) and choose options for print size, print base, frame and mat. Once you are done, click on the ‘ADD TO CART’ button.

Check your order

Fill in the billing address and the shipping address (you only have to do this for your first buy unless you change your address), then check the sale price, the shipping charge and the total price. For an original artwork, the shipping charge will appear as ‘TBC’ (to be confirmed). If you’re happy with your order, click on the ‘ORDER NOW’ button. For a print, on the other hand, the shipping charge is already set and you just need to click on the ‘PAY NOW’ button.

Pay and wait for your order icon

Complete your payment via PayPal

If your order is a print, complete your payment via PayPal. It will usually be shipped in 3 – 5 working days. If your order is an original artwork, we will get back to you with the shipping charge within 7 days which you may agree or disagree to pay (see Introduction).

Keep or Return icon

Returns

You have 7 days from the date of delivery to decide whether to keep or return a purchased artwork. If you decide to return the artwork, you should let us know via our Contact Us form (www.artris.com/support/contactus). You should not ship out the artwork before we advise you to do so. If the return is in its original condition, you will be fully refunded for the sale price of the artwork (note that ARTRIS does not reimburse outgoing or return shipping charges unless the return is due to a defect in quality).

Complete your profile

Sign in and navigate to your portfolio from the member icon menu. Complete your profile including your name, headshot image, artist statement, and other information. Note that all of your portfolio information will be disclosed on the ARTRIS website.

Photograph your artworks Icon

Photograph your artworks

Using a decent digital camera and lightings, take high quality photographs of your artworks without any front glass or acrylic panel. It is better to take a few additional photographs to show certain parts of you artwork in detail or the frame (if included in your sale). If you are not properly equipped to ensure quality of your images of artworks, we strongly recommend you have a professional photographer to take photographs of your artworks. Each of your images must be: (i) a JPEG file; (ii) at least 2000 pixels X 2000 pixels; (iii) less than 50MB in size.

Upload images of your artworks Icon

Upload images of your artworks

Upload images of your original artworks by clicking on the ‘+’ button under the Artworks tab in your portfolio. For each of the uploaded images, you need to: (i) add details including title, keywords, description, category, medium, base, style, subject, year of creation, and dimensions; (ii) decide whether to sell original, prints or both; (iii) decide whether to allow other members to put your artwork in their exhibitions.

Price your artworks Icon

Price your artworks

You need to set a sale price for each of your original artworks. Appropriate pricing is critical to selling your artworks and therefore it is very important to adopt consistent, reasonable pricing principles. As a rough guide, take into account: (i) total number of hours you spent on the artwork; (ii) your hourly wage; and (iii) material costs.

If you want to sell prints of your artworks on ARTRIS, you also need to set a license fee for each print size of your artworks. To set a reasonable license fee, consider the sale price of the original artwork (higher sale price, higher license fee) and the size of prints (larger print size, higher license fee).

Promote sales Icon

Promote sales

Promote sales by hosting online exhibitions to expose your artworks to numerous members and visitors of ARTRIS from all over the world. Collectors are much more likely to see your artworks this way than if they were only in the listings. Another tip to maximize exposure is to share links of your portfolio, online exhibitions, and recently uploaded artworks on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.

Package and ship your original artwork Icon

Package and ship your original artwork

When one of your original artworks is sold, there are a few things you need to do: (i) Prepare the Certificate of Authenticity of your artwork and include it in the package;
(ii) Package your artwork sensibly using corner protectors, bubble wrap, packing tape, thick foam boards, and a sturdy cardboard box;
(iii) Measure the dimensions (width, height and depth) and the weight of the package;
(iv) Consult with an international shipper and get a shipping quote for your package (Please note that the shipping quote should represent a competitive price for all shipping and insurance fees);
(v) Estimate your handling charge considering the packaging costs;
(vi) Calculate the shipping charge by adding the shipping quote and the handling charge (This total is the amount you would like to charge the collector for shipping and handling);
(vii) By clicking on the link we will send you, enter the shipping size, weight and the shipping charge within 7 days from the order date;
(viii) Ship your artwork to the collector when we advise you to do so.

If a print of your artwork is sold, ARTRIS will credit your PayPal account with an amount equivalent to the license fee you had set for the artwork less any applicable tax.

The sales credit will be released after the sold artwork has been delivered to the collector and the 7-day return period has expired.
