How It Works

ARTRIS is an open marketplace for artists, galleries, and collectors

Join ARTRIS as one of the following member types:

  • Artist Artist to sell artworks
  • Curator Gallery or Curator to open online exhibitions
  • Collector Collector to buy artworks

ARTRIS membership and listings are free of charge

  • Join us and become a member for free.
  • Create your own portfolio page and upload artworks for free too.

Have a simple and catchy portfolio URL of your own

  • Your User-ID is used to set your portfolio address and it is desirable to set a memorable one. For example, if you set your User-ID as ‘picasso’, your portfolio address will be automatically set as ‘www.artris.com/picasso’.
  • Note that your User-ID cannot be changed once it has been registered.

Original artworks are sold by individual artists via ARTRIS (ARTRIS provides an escrow service to give you peace of mind)

  • When an original artwork is booked for sale, the artist should set the shipping charge within 7 days and the collector can agree or disagree to pay this within another 7 days.
  • If the collector pays the total price (sale price plus shipping charge), (i) the artist will ship the artwork directly to the collector within 7 days, and (ii) ARTRIS will release to the artist an amount equivalent to the total price less fees and any applicable tax after the artwork has been delivered and the 7-day return period has expired.
  • If the collector doesn’t pay the total price, the sale will be cancelled.

Our sales commission is one of the lowest in the market

  • Our sales commission for original artworks can be as low as ZERO percent of the sale price according to the resolution of the image you upload.
  •   - Image resolution greater than 8,000 pixels on the long-side: 0% of the sale price
  •   - Image resolution greater than 6,000 pixels on the long-side: 4% of the sale price
  •   - Image resolution greater than 4,000 pixels on the long-side: 8% of the sale price
  • You may choose not to sell prints but in that case our sales commission for the original artworks will be 12% of the sale price regardless of the resolution of the image you upload.

Prints are individually made-to-orders and sold by ARTRIS

  • ARTRIS sells print-on-demand artworks in various forms with or without frames.
  • On the sale of a print, ARTRIS pays the license fee to the artist.

Open online exhibitions for free

  • A gallery can open 8-week online exhibitions free of charge, two or more exhibitions at a time, for unlimited times.
  • A curator can open 8-week online exhibitions free of charge, only one exhibition at a time, for unlimited times.
  • For every sale of original artworks made in an exhibition, the gallery/curator earns 20% of the sale price (Artists can save the gallery/curator’s sales commission if they host exhibitions themselves).

7-day money back guarantee

  • If you are not happy with a purchased artwork for any reason, you can return it within 7 days from the date of delivery. If you decided to return your purchase, please consult with us via the Contact Us form (www.artris.com/support/contactus). You should not ship out the artwork before ARTRIS advise you to do so. Browse artworks icon

Browse artworks

There are two ways you can browse artworks: (a) online exhibitions where selected artworks are displayed in a gallery-like setting; (b) listings of artworks. We suggest you browse and explore the exhibitions first. When you flip through listings of artworks, you can use filters or sort tools under Artworks menu to narrow down the artworks you like.

Visit the artwork page

Once you have found an artwork you like, click on the image to visit the artwork page. On the artwork page, you can view the artwork in detail by clicking on the image, or you can view the artwork presented in a room by clicking on the ‘View-in-a-Room’ button at the top-left corner.

To buy an original artwork: click on the ‘Original’ button (if the ‘Original’ button is not activated, the original artwork is unavailable for sale), then click on the ‘ADD TO CART’ button.

Or, if you want to buy a print: choose a print format out of ‘Framed Print’, ‘Canvas Print’, and ‘Print Only’ (if these print buttons are not activated, prints are unavailable for that artwork) and then choose options from select boxes such as print size, print base, frame, mat with, and mat color. Once you are done, click on the ‘ADD TO CART’ button.

For prints, check your order details, the sale price, the shipping charge, voucher discount (you can get voucher discount up to 10% of the sale price), and the total price. If everything is OK, click on the ‘PAY NOW’ button.

Complete your profile

Sign in and the member menu will appear when you put your mouse pointer on the blank headshot image at the top-right corner. From the member menu, click on the Account menu and navigate to your Profile page. On the Profile page, upload your headshot image, complete Personal Statement, Education and Career, and Exhibitions and Prizes. Once finished, save your profile information. Note that your profile information is disclosed on the ARTRIS website.

Photograph your artworks Icon

Photograph your artwork

Using a decent digital camera (preferrably a DSLR camera) and lightings, photograph your artwork without any front glass or acrylic sheet. It is better to take a few additional photographs to show certain parts of you artwork in detail or the frame (if included in your sale). If you are not properly equipped to ensure the photograph quality of your artwork, we strongly recommend you have a professional photographer take photos of your artwork. Please note that SMARTPHONE CAMERAS ARE NO GOOD for this kind of work as they have a small built-in lens that is vastly inferior to a proper camera lens.

Each of your images must be: (i) a JPEG file, (ii) at least 4,000 pixels of resolution on the long-side, (iii) less than 50MB in size.

Note that our sales commission for original artworks is determined according to the resolution of the image you upload:
• Image resolution greater than 8,000 pixels on the long-side: 0% of the sale price
• Image resolution greater than 6,000 pixels on the long-side: 4% of the sale price
• Image resolution greater than 4,000 pixels on the long-side: 8% of the sale price

You may choose not to sell prints but in that case our sales commission for the original artworks will be 12% of the sale price regardless of the resolution of the image you upload.

YOU MUST NOT INCREASE IMAGE RESOLUTION USING ANY IMAGE EDITING SOFTWARE.

Upload images of your artworks Icon

Upload images of your artwork

Note that artworks can be uploaded only on desktop or laptop computers.

Upload images of your original artwork by clicking on the ‘+’ button under the Artworks tab in your Portfolio. For each of the uploaded artworks, you need to: (i) add details including title, keywords, description, category, medium, base, style, subject, year of creation, and dimensions; (ii) decide whether to sell original, prints or both; (iii) decide whether to allow other members to put your artwork in their exhibitions.

Price your artworks Icon

Price your artworks

You need to set a sale price for your original artwork. Appropriate pricing is critical to selling your artwork and therefore it is very important to adopt consistent, reasonable pricing principles. As a rough guide, take into account: (i) total number of hours you spent on the artwork; (ii) your hourly wage; and (iii) material costs.

In order to sell prints of your artwork, you need to set a license fee for every print size of your artwork. To set a reasonable license fee, consider the sale price of the original artwork (higher sale price, higher license fee) and the print size (larger print size, higher license fee). By default, your license fee will be automatically set according to the standard license fee. You may change your license fee but not more than double the standard license fee.

Promote sales Icon

Promote sales

Host online exhibitions yourself (any artist may host exhibitions) to expose your artworks to numerous members and visitors of ARTRIS from all over the world. Collectors are much more likely to see your artworks this way than if they were only in the listings. Another tip to maximize exposure is to share the links of your portfolio, exhibitions, and recently uploaded artworks on social media platforms.

Package and ship your original artwork Icon

Package and ship your original artwork

When your original artwork is sold, there are a few things you need to do:
(i) Prepare the Certificate of Authenticity of your artwork and include it in the package
(ii) Package your artwork sensibly using corner protectors, bubble wrap, packing tape, thick foam boards, and a sturdy cardboard box
(iii) Measure the dimensions (width, height and depth) and the weight of the package
(iv) Consult with an international shipper and get a shipping quote for your package (Please note that the shipping quote should represent a competitive price for all shipping and insurance fees)
(v) Estimate your handling charge considering the packaging costs
(vi) Calculate the shipping charge by adding the shipping quote and the handling charge (This total is the amount you would like to charge the collector for shipping and handling)
(vii) By clicking on the link we will send you, enter the shipping charge within 7 days from the order date
(viii) Ship your artwork to the collector when we advise you to do so.

If your original artwork is sold, ARTRIS will credit your PayPal account with an amount equivalent to the total price (the sale price plus the shipping charge) less PayPal payment processing fee (4.4% of the total price plus $0.30 USD), ARTRIS sales commission (0% - 12% of the sale price), Gallery/Curator’s sales commission (20% of the sale price, if the sale was made in their exhibition), and any applicable tax.

If a print of your artwork is sold, ARTRIS will credit your PayPal account with an amount equivalent to the license fee you had set for the artwork less any applicable tax.

The sales credit will be released after the sold artwork has been delivered to the collector and the 7-day return period has expired.

Pay tax

For your income from sales of original artworks, consult with the appropriate taxing authority in your country and pay any applicable tax.

For your license fee income from sales of prints, please upload a completed Tax Form No. 29-12 (downloadable at your Account page) to your Account and a reduced tax rate under the relevant tax treaty between South Korea and your country will be applied. Otherwise, ARTRIS may withhold at the maximum tax rate (currently 22% of your license fee income).
